Sprechen Sie Deutsch or would you like to? If your answer is yes - this might just be an ideal university for you to study at! Die Universität Wien, i.e. the university of Vienna, is the oldest university on a German speaking territory. It was founded in the other half of 14th century, right at the beginning of the renaissance in Europe. Situated in the East of Austria, it is close to Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic. Next year the university will be celebrating its 650th anniversary.

Since it was founded, the University has been gaining popularity and developing. It is a place of high quality education as well as personal growth. International students are welcome as exchange students or degree students. The process of admission will be different for those who come from EU countries or from non-EU countries. If you are interested in taking a bachelors course and you are an EU citizen, there are three steps to follow: online pre-registration, submission of the documents in person and fees payments. Non-EU citizens will have to do an online pre-registration, filling out the forms and mailing them. It is very important to note that among documents one should also submit a certificate stating that your German skills are B2/2. Also, all of the documents which can be translated (does not apply for passports for example) must be officially translated into German or English. Admission deadlines are around early February for summer semesters and around early September for winter semesters.

Master degree programmes are a bit trickier for international students as one should have proofs of German and English proficiency as well. However, the application seems a bit easier as apparently most of the steps can be done on-line. The deadlines are mid July for winter semesters and mid January for summer semesters. After applying with complete documentations, the information about acceptance should be sent to the applicant after 12 weeks. On-line pre-registrations are also acquired.

Being able to speak and understand German is mandatory

This University seems to be a good option for those who can speak German quite well. Some programmes are held in English as well so it really depends on what you want to study. Perhaps the best thing should be to check out that thing first and see if there is a language barrier that keeps you away from what you want to study. Accomodations are also not cheap. One can pick between dormitory or apartment. The prices for dormitory rooms are from 150 to 250€. Sharing an apartment with other students could be of around the same price. Meals are offered in cafeterias which are available to everyone but students can get discounts. Another good thing is that the university is offering some scholarships to their students which can be checked on its official sites. If you are coming from abroad this university might be a good option.
